About the Club

The Club was founded in 1921 by Stanley Nairne OBE who was affectionately known as " The Boss".

At first the Club premises consisted of just a wooden hut, but in 1934 the first part of a permanent new building was opened.North Merchiston Club Hut For a further 6 years the "hut" continued to be used, but in 1939 it was demolished and the remainder of the permanent building was erected. When completed and finally opened in 1940 it was without doubt one of the finest buildings for youth in Scotland and indeed the UK. In those days there was a North Merchiston ClubBoys' Club and a Girls' Club which, on occasion, came together for activities such as drama and the popular annual pantomime. The "Sea of Change" of the 60's and 70's saw the Club turn into an Activities/Sports Club for young people.

Today it has added adults and OAPs to its programme of activities, however it's main emphasis continues to remain in providing opportunities for young people in a safe environment.

The main sporting activities include football, martial arts (4 Disciplines) and Table Tennis, however there are other pursuits such as camping, exchange visits, athletics, drama, canoeing, hillwalking etc. which take place throughout the year, but not on a weekly basis.

The Club continues to thrive after 83 years of existence mainly due to its ability to change and give what is attractive to present day youth.

Not an easy task but, touch wood, so far it has managed to achieve its goals.
