PREMIER CHAMPIONS AT NORTH MERCHISTON 2008/9 Season SENIORS Success for North Merchiston. For the 7th year in succession, the Senior Team has won the Edinburgh and Lothians Table Tennis League Premier Division - the successful team was Willie Mabon, David Atkins and Stewart Armitage North Merchiston Club also had teams occupying 4 of the top 5 positions in the Premier Division. David Atkins won all of his 60 games he played in and North Merchiston players occupied 9 of the top 11 personal performance positions in the individual performance listing for the Premier Division. JUNIORS Life Member Craig Howieson, a member of the British Table Tennis Federation Olympic Squad selected for preparation for the 2012 Olympics played well in Commonwealth Games after being selected for all of Scotland's matches. Craig is close to the No 2 senior raning position in Scotland. Ying Jin won the National Under 12 Schools Championship and played as No 1 player in the Scottish Under 12 team which won the Six Nations Team Championships. And for the 2nd consecutive year, Ying won the CYP UK under 12 Table Tennis Championship Maddie Miller finished 2nd in the National Schools Under 16 Championships plus qualified for the Scotland Under 16 team at the Six Nations Championships. |Lesley Atkins won the Under 14 National Schools Championship and qualified for the Scotland under 14 team at the Six Nations Championship. Lesley also partnered Maddie to success in the Scottish Junior Inter League competition. This achievement was all the more remarkable as it was in the under 19 category, and the girls have received recognition with an award from the Edinburgh & Lothians Table Tennis league.
OUR TALENTED PLAYERS North Merchiston Club has a highly successful Table Tennis section - see Club news for this years successes. The Club is rightly proud of all its success and several players have gone on to play the sport at the highest level. Craig Howieson from Edinburgh joined the Club at the age of 8, and since the age of 14 has been a Scotland Senior International Player. Now 19, Craig is a member of the British Table Tennis Federation Olympic Squad selected for preparation for the 2012 Olympics. In the World Senior Championships during 2008, Craig won 6 of his 10 matches, helping Scotland to gain promotion. Craig has played for Scotland in the European Youth Championships held in Italy in July 2008, and represented Scotland at the Commonwealth Youth Games in India in August 2008, and has been selected to play for Scotland in the 2009 Senior Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships. Stewart Armitage was a Scotland Junior International player during 2008 and won the Clubs for Youth People British Under 18 Table Tennis Championships in 2008 and has been selected to play in the 2009 Senior Commonwealth Table Tennis Individual Championships. Looking to the future, our rising stars in the Junior section are:- Lesley is 14 years old and is ranked No. 1 Under 15 girl in Scotland and is Scottish Schools Under 15 Champion. She is also a Scotland Under 15 International player and has played for Scotland at the 6 Nations Championships and is in the Scotland Schools Team Ying is the 11 yr old winner of the Scottish Under 12's Championship, No 1 player for Scotland and gold medal winner at the 6 Nations Team Championship 2009, won by Scotland. Ying is also a Member of the Scotland Under 13 Squad and won the Clubs for Young People British Under 12 Championships in 2009 and will play for Scotland in the upcoming Under 14 Six Nations Schools Championship Kirsten won the Edinburgh and Lothians Mixed Under 12's Schools Table Tennis Championship. Robbie is a silver medal winner playing for Scotland at the Six Nations Under 12 Championship. Kathryn played for the Scotland Girls Under 16 team at the British Schools International Championships held in June 2008. Madeleine will play for the Scotland Under 16 team at the Six Nations 2009 Schools Championships. With the excellent coaching and development here at North Merchiston, it will not be long before Kamran, Michele, Nina, Imogen, Esme and Anna are following in the footsteps of our successful winning players.
